The Enchanting Music of Sign Language, By : Christine Sun Kim

Sun Kim was born as a deaf and she believe that sound was not part of her life. But she realize that sounds was very much a part of her life, because she lives in a world of sound. She understand sound by watching people behave and response to sound. In deaf culture, movement is similar as sound. When she visited some museums and gallery in Berlin, Germany, in 2008, she noticed there was no visual art, everything was auditory. So she reclaimed sound into her art practice. She started creating a new body of work. When she presented it to the art community, she got support and appreciated by others. So she realized that sound is like a money, power, control and social currency.
Sun works with many different ASL interpreters, who can support her to be heard. Sound become her new art medium. She delved into the world of music and she saw the similarities between music and ASL. She gave some example of them, which showed the musicality of sign language. ASL is alive and thriving, just like a music. Sun exclaim that people don’t need to be deaf to learn ASL. When they take a part of learning sign language, they might fall in love with it.
