The Relation of Teachers’ Role in Creating Learning
Environment and The Students’ Motivation in Learning
(A survey at 5th Semester Students of English Deparment of UIN
Ar-Raniry)
A.
Background
In
the relation to the learning spirit of students, enthusiasm in learning is
important in the teaching learning process, because learning with the passion
will encourage students to learn better than learning without passion. A
proliferation of research from Eschenmann (1991) and other scholars suggests that
if teachers take the time to build relationships they can motivate their
students to learn. Further
research (Whitaker, 2004) also suggests that teachers need to have a strong
belief that building relationships are important to the motivation process.
This
paper wants to answer the question “is the role of teacher influence the students’ motivation”. This study aims to
figure out whether the role of teacher in creating an atmosphere of learning
process influence the students’ motivation or not.
B.
Literature
Review
The
students must have a good motivation when they learn something. When students
are motivated they will set individual goals for themselves and modify their
behavior in order to meet those goals. Teacher knowledge and efficacy of
student motivation and achievement are crucial components to creating
relationships that motivate (Nugent : 1999). Classroom climate is important. If students
experience the classroom as a caring, supportive place where there is a sense
of belonging and everyone is valued and respected they will tend to appreciate
more fully in the process of learning. As Hannula (2006) points out “To
understand students’ behaviour we need to know their motives” (p. 165).
Theorists believe that motivation has a determinative role in students’ success
and failure in school (Cury, Elliot, Fonseca, & Moller, 2006; Pintrich,
2003). Fredson also said that “by
having a supportive relationship with teachers, students will be motivated,
will feel protected and this sense of security and friendship will create an
empathy which is important to get students interested and desirable to succeed”
(2015 : p.6). Therefore, to motivate students, the teacher must be able to make
the learning environment of students be fun.

The researcher take the fifth semester
students of English Department of UIN Ar-Raniry as a population which consist
of 280 students. The sample is chosen by cluster random sampling. The sample
for this study was 30 students (4 students per unit).

questionnaire. The sample of this study filled the questionnaire voluntary.
There were six questions in the questionnaire, each question consist of 4
options : strongly agree, agree, neutral, and disagree.
Data
Analysis
The instrument use in this study was
questionnaire for the sample. The data gathered from the instrument have been
analyzed by statistically. It were arranged
together as a group by using simple percentage formula :
P
= percentage of agreement
f
= the number of frequency of the respondent answer
N
= the number of respondent

the table we can analyze that from the first question,
54.8% of the students of the fifth semester in English Department, strongly
agree that the role of lecture in the classsroom is very influenced their
motivation and none of them disagree about it. In the second question, we can
see that 64.5% students agree if condusive class can improve their learning

if the lecturer’s skill in teaching is affected the student motivation in
learning, and 54.8% of students will be spirit if an atmosphere in the
classroom is active (questions 4&5). The lecturer must have pedagogical

E.
Conclusion
The lecturers’s role is very influenced their students.
When a lecturer teach a class, he/she have to be a good model to his/her
students. It can cause the students motivation in learning, especially in the
classroom. The result obtained from the study show us that the lecturers’
ability in teaching is also influenced the students’ motivation, if he/she good
in teaching when learning process, of course the students will happy and enjoy
the class. Most of the students agree if the role of the lecturer influenced
their motivation. So, the lecturer have to motivate his/her student by giving a
