Jay Walker starts by talking about manias in the world. Beatlemania, sport mania, religious mania. Jay highlights that mania can be good, can be alarming, or can be deadly. Mania for English is a new mania. In Latin America, India, Southeast Asia, and the most of all, in China. Jay shows photos and videos how Chinese students learn English. Chinese students start to learn English in the third grade by law. In 2009, China become the world largest English speaking country. They learn english because of opportunity for better life, job, able to pay for school, or put better food on the table. The intensity to learn English is almost unimaginable, unless we witness it.
English is not tsunami that washing away other languages, but English is the second language in the world. By English someone can become part of a global conversation about global problem. Jay mention other language in the world, such as mathematic is the language of science, music is the language of emotion, and English is becoming the language of problem solving. English represents hope for a better future where the world has a common language to solve its common problems.
