When we want to write about a topic in more detail, we can turn our paragraph into an essay. We write a paragraph composing three sections, these are topic sentence, body, and concluding sentence. Similar to a paragraph, an essay is also composed of three sections. These are introductory paragraf, supporting paragraph (body of paragraph), and concluding paragraph. The topic sentence of the paragraph becomes the thesis statement of the essay, which comes at the end of the introductory paragraph. The supporting sentences of the paragraph become the topic sentence in an essay in several paragraphs based on our topic or idea. . And the last is the concluding sentence is made into a concluding paragraph.
The first paragraph in an essay is introductory paragraph. The function of introductory paragraph is to get readers’ attention and to introduce the subject of the essay. There are many ways for writer to get the redaers’ attention in an introductory paragraph. First is Anecdote, it is a brief story that illustrated the topic. Whether on our experience or invent a story about someone else. The second is interesting facts or statistics. To write this kind of introduction, we need to be aware of commonly known information. The third is historical introduction, this is not meant to be a comprehensive account, it simply provides general historical background. And the last is general specific. It begins with general statement of a large topic, then each sentence narrows it down until we get to the specific thesis statement.
In an introductory paragraph also has a thesis statement. It is the most important sentence in the essay. A thesis statement has two main parts, the topic and the controlling idea. The topis is the subject of the essay. The controlling idea is what we are going to say about the topic. In addition, some thesis statement may also have a third component called a predictor. The predictor of thesis statement tells the reader how many body paragraph there will be in the essay.
The last section in an essay is concluding paragraph. A concluding paragraph consist of a summaryof the points made in our body paragraphs, a restatement of the thesis statement, or a final comment on our topic. When we want to choose summary as a concluding paragraph, we must make sure that we include all the topic in the body paragraphs. Restatement also an alternative to summary of the idea of thesis statement. A concluding paragraph is most effective when we add a final comment to a summary or a restatement or both. We may choose one of these ways to end our essay, or may choose two or three. The choice is depend on the writer.
